Understanding Time Zones

The world is divided into 24 standard time zones, each spanning roughly 15 degrees of longitude. Every zone is defined as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) — the modern successor to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). For example, America/New_York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer (due to Daylight Saving Time).

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Most of the United States, Canada, and Europe observe Daylight Saving Time, shifting clocks forward one hour in spring and back in autumn. Not all countries do this — Japan, China, India, and most of Africa stay on standard time year-round. When scheduling international meetings, always confirm whether a region is currently on standard or daylight time. Our converter uses your browser's Intl.DateTimeFormat API and the IANA timezone database, so DST is handled automatically.
